India-Born Ex-Google Executive Appointed SoftBank President

  • India-born former Google executive Nikesh Arora has been appointed the president of Japan's telecommunications giant SoftBank Corp that paid the "rising star" a whopping $135 million for the financial year 2014.
  • Mr Arora, 47, who earlier held the vice president's post, was appointed company president and chief operating officer at a general meeting of shareholders here on Friday.

T'puram likely to host SAFF tournament

  • The Kerala Football Association has not got wind of it yet but the South Asian Football (SAFF) Championship is likely to be held in Thiruvananthapuram in December.
  • “It is the SAFF body (South Asian Football Federation) which decides on this with its commercial partner WSG (World Sports Group).
  • With the FIFA World Cup qualifying rounds currently on and with the Indian Super League from October and with the South Asian Games likely to be held in Assam and Meghalaya by the end of this year, it’s going to be a crowded calendar for Indian football.
  • The last SAFF Championship was held in Nepal in August 2013 and Afghanistan defeated India 2-0 in the final.

NALSAR issues gender-neutral certificate

  • NALSAR University of Law here has issued India’s “first gender-neutral certificate” with the honorific ‘Mx’ after a student requested it instead of ‘Mr’ or ‘Ms’.
  • However, the decision had its own controversies with a section of teachers saying the academic bodies of the university have not cleared the move, which, they say, is mandatory for such major changes.
  • The provisional certificate was issued to Mx. Anindita Mukherjee. But whether the honorific will remain in the final certificate is a question now.
  • The degree has to be signed by the Chief Justice of the High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad for the States of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh as he is the Chancellor.
  • Several teachers, who wish to remain anonymous, say the Academic Council, comprising High Court judges and Vice-Chancellors of various universities, should have a debate on any major changes to be introduced.

BCCI launches probe into Dhoni's conflict of interest case

  • Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has launched a probe against India's ODI and T20I captain MS Dhoni's alleged conflict of interest issue due to his association with Rhiti Sports Management Private Limited.

  • Rhiti sports manages Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja amongst others and also handles marketing for IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings - of which Dhoni is captain. Dhoni's friend, Arun Pandey has started the company and the former is believed to have a 15% stake in the firm.

  • According to a report in Hindustan Times, BCCI have a three-member probe committee looking into the matter and the BCCI president, Jagmohan Dalmiya is a part of the committee. The other two members are Jyotiraditya Scindia and KP Kajaria.
