Guam beat India 2-1 in 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier

  • Guam produced another stunning result as the tiny Pacific island side beat India 2-1 to move to the top of their 2018 World Cup qualifying group.
  • Looking to build on their 1-0 win over Turkmenistan last Thursday, the Matao took the game to their visitors who are currently 141st on the Fifa World Ranking, 33 spots ahead of them

  • Sunil Chhetri got a consolation goal for India with the last kick of the game but it did little to take the shine off another remarkable result for Guam, who moved to the top of Group D with six points from two games.

  • Guam, a United States island territory in the Western Pacific with a population of less than 200,000, are competing in the World Cup qualifiers for the first time since 2000 when they were beaten 19-0 by Iran and 16-0 by Tajikistan.

  • A total of 15 matches are being played throughout Asia on Tuesday in matches that serve as qualifiers for both the 2018 World Cup and the 2019 AFC Asian Cup.

Jacob Zuma assured AU Al-Bashir would not be arrested, says Mugabe

  • African Union chairperson Robert Mugabe said on Monday that President Jacob Zuma had guaranteed the AU Summit that his Sudanese counterpart Omar Al-Bashir will not be arrested by police once he set foot on South African soil.

  • The summit, which was held from June 7 in Sandton north of Johannesburg, was officially closed by Mugabe some time after midnight.

Anand holds Carlsen, slips to joint fourth

  • Viswanathan Anand maintained his composure and played out an easy draw against the reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway in the fifth and final round of classical section at the Zurich Chess challenge here.

  • Former world champion Anand finished the classical section on four points with one win, two draws and two losses and the Indian will have to do some recovery act in the rapid section that follows.

  • Anand and Hikaru Nakamura of the United States share the fourth spot on four points each.

Bengaluru to host ATP Challenger in October

  • After a gap of 12 years, the city will host an ATP Challenger tournament — a men’s $50,000 prize money event, to be held from October 19 to 25.

  • The qualifying rounds will be held on October 17 and 18. The country’s top singles players, Somdev Devvarman, Yuki Bhambri, Ramkumar Ramanathan among others, are expected to be part of a field which is likely include a few top-100 players from 8-10 countries.

  • The Karnataka State Lawn Association last conducted an event of this magnitude way back in 2003 when Gregory Carraz walked away with a grand double.
